I have a question! What does Matthew see in Hosea (or the Book of the Prophets) that lets him apply Hosea 11:1 to Christ in Matthew 2:15?
Matthew is quoting Hosea 11:1. Hosea is quoting from Balaam's oracle in Numbers 24:8. In Numbers 23:32, Balaam's second oracle, Balaam prophesies "God brings them out of Egypt and is for them like the horns of the wild ox." In the context the "them" is Israel being brought out of Egypt in the Exodus.
In the very next chapter Balaam makes another prophecy. Although the language is similar there is one important difference. Look at Num 24:8 "God brings him out of Egypt and is for him like the horns of the wild ox; he shall eat up the nations, his adversaries,
and shall break their bones in pieces
and pierce them through with his arrows." The plural "them" of chapter 23 has been changed to the singular "him" in chapter 24.
The context makes clear this "him" is the Messiah. In verse 9, we read, "He crouched, he lay down like a lion and like a lioness; who will rouse him up?" This is an explicit reference to Gen 49, the blessing of Judah. In 49:9 we read: "Judah is a lion's cub; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down; he crouched as a lion
and as a lioness; who dares rouse him?
10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples."
Although there is a lot more to say, I think when Matthew quotes Hosea he is not resorting to typology. Rather, when Hosea quotes from the Pentateuch, Moses has already made clear that one from the tribe of Judah is coming in the last days to reign over all the nations. This seed will be called up out of Egypt. I think Hosea is following the authorial intent of Moses and Matthew simply picks up on this and does the same thing.
Sorry for such a long answer. Shoot me an email if you want to discuss it more in depth: roarknick@earthlink.net
